Babely Beer Battered Tofu <3

Hi lovelies! It’s Monday and I am feeling some serious comfort food vibez as I catch up on laundry and…well… Netflix watching!
I looked in my fridge the other day, and noticed a brick of black pepper smoked tofu I hadn’t done anything with…sitting next to a tall can of beer. My two favourite things omggggg /heart eyes! So, I decided, why not fry those two things together into babely little golden dream like morsels of delicious and cover that ish in vegan cheese sauce?!?!? DONE.

This recipe is super simple- I really can’t imagine anyone messing it up. Back in the day, I used to substitute half the soy milk in my pancakes ALL THE TIME for beer. Any beer! Stouts, pumpkin ale, raspberry infusions- there would always be a different flavour profile, and the beer makes them so bubbly and fluffy! I applied the same type of consistency for the batter in these fried tofu babes, and it seems to have worked quite while!

1.5 cups your favourite beer
2 cups flour
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp salt
pepper to taste
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 brick of tofu (I love smoked, but a pressed extra firm or firm will work also!)
oil for frying

-Heat oil in a deep frying pan on medium heat.
-Sift together dry ingredients and set aside.
-Pour beer into a bowl, and slowly whisk in the dry ingredients. You will want the consistency of thick pancake batter. Depending on the beer you use and how shitty of a pour you are (I for example pretty much pour ALL FOAM), at this point you will want to add water until desired constancy.
-Slice your brick of tofu. I like to slice them an inch thick, then slice in half again lengthwise.

When oil is heated, coat your tofu pieces one by one until covered in beer battery goodness. Fry for 30 seconds on each side, or until golden brown!

You can seriously coat these babies in whatever you’d like! I recommend vegan tartar sauce, BBQ, or… in this case, smothered in the trashy cheese sauce I use to coat everything! Best served alongside the rest of your beer, and season 9 of Trailer Park Boys. Seriously dying over here of happy! It’s too classy up in the cozy vegan haus.

This recipe looks delicious— and combines several things I love love love, beer, tofu and broccoli. It’s been a long week, and I could use some comfort food 🙂
